Marrakech from above. January ‘25.

Five weeks into 2025 and things are not great, Bob. You don’t need me to tell you that there’s a lot going on in the world right now, and most of it is deeply unsettling. If ‘collective realisations’ could still be said to exist, I’d say that now is the moment everyone is really, truly starting to understand that no-one is coming to save us, least of all our elected representatives. The question of the year, if not the era, then becomes: How will we save ourselves (and each other)? More thoughts on that in a future newsletter.

For now, some light relief in the form of my modes of inspiration, restoration, and straight-up distraction from the year thus far. When I interviewed health coach Daphne Javitch aka Doing Well for Deep Read, she spoke about the importance of ‘resourcing’ ourselves, which I took to mean: Filling our cups so we can show up as the humans we’d like to be in the world. Here’s a small sampling of my current resources.

Read on for…

  • Details of a recent trip to Marrakech, which highlighted how intense my SAD actually is: by the end of a week in the North African sunshine, I felt mentally energised in a way I haven’t for months. It was my first time in the city and I loved it! Here’s where I stayed, what I ate, and the hammam experience that was better than any spa treatment I’ve ever had in my life.

  • The sacred nightly bathing routine that constitutes 95% of my post-baby self-care.

  • The no-filler prenatal vitamins I’m still taking (which I think have saved me from total postpartum depletion and made my hair grow back).

  • A really good, glowy and cheap facial SPF50 I’ve been using and loving recently.

  • A few online long reads I’ve bookmarked of late.
