Today’s Deep Read (Apple | Spotify) is a conversation with Leigh Patterson, editorial director and founder of the Moon Lists.
For the unfamiliar, Moon Lists is a journalling platform which uses the moon as a metaphor to “ask questions, share prompts, and create tools to inspire different ways of thinking.” As someone who has long been committed to a writing-based, self-enquiry practice of my own (I share a few of my regular reflection rituals alongside the usual Deep Reading list below) Leigh’s quirky yet highly precise prompts help me to look at my circumstances anew.
Among many other things, Leigh and I spoke about why, in our attention economy, creating a ritual around the details of our daily existence is so valuable: if we are incapable of choosing where our focus lies, who will ultimately decide for us? At the less dystopian end of the spectrum, there’s such pleasure to be found in the art of noticing. After all, it’s the seemingly insignificant details that form the backbone of our lived experience. As James Salter, one of Leigh’s favourite authors, says: “Life is weather, life is meals.”
I hope you enjoy the conversation.
